BULALA: THE SUPERNATURAL ISLAMIC CLERIC

_________________________________________
Sheikh Muhammad Jamiu Bulala (1919-1989) was an eccentric preacher of the Tijaniyyah sect. He was born into a royal family in 1919 at Offa, Kwara State, his father, Sayyid Abdul-Hakeem Iji of the Lagbelu royal family of Ogbomosho, worked with the Nigerian Railways Corporation. He transferred his service from Ibadan to Offa and settled in Offa. His mother, Humuani Oyebimpe Abebi was a Princess of the Anilelerin ruling house in Offa.

He started Quranic education from Sheikh Ismaila Jeje at Ile Arogun. His performance at the Quranic School was exceptional according to his Alfa, he had good memory with the capacity of accurate recall of what he was taught. Within a very short time, Sheikh Jamiu had completed the Quran and left for IIorin for further studies in Sheikh Alfa Basheer Adangba’s Ile kewu (Islamic school).

After sometime, his teacher called him and said “Alfa Offa, you have learnt enough and also learnt what we did not even teach you. You are blessed and nobody shall be your teacher again.” And that was the end of Sheikh Jamiu’s tutelage in Islamic education. The name Bulala was added to Sheikh’s name because he was always with horsewhip anytime he was going out to frighten any woman wearing earrings or whom he perceived indecently dressed.

He once told his followers that he was a reincarnation of one of the past Walis. He explained to his disciples that pious people like Walis of Allah do not die but transmigrate to another pious body to be reborn for continuity of the job given to them by Allah.

Sheikh Bulala published numerous Islamic poems, the most populous are Qasidat Labayk and Qasidat Nuniyyah.  Sheikh Muhammad Jamiu Bulala died in 1989.
